Smart Inlays for Simultaneous Crack Sensing and Arrest in Multifunctional Bondlines of Composites

Disbond arrest features combined with a structural health monitoring system for permanent bondline surveillance have the potential to significantly increase safety of adhesive bonds in composite structures. A core requirement is that integration such achieved without causing weakening bondline. We present design smart inlay equipped micro strain sensor-system fabricated on polyvinyliden fluorid (PVDF) foil material. This material has proven disbond functionality, but not before been used as substrate lithographic sensor fabrication. Only special pretreatment can it meet requirements thin film elements regarding surface roughness and adhesion. Moreover, into using standard manufacturing procedure reveals inlays endure this process even though subjected high temperatures, curing reactions plasma treatment. Most critical melting during when sensory function preserved covering caul plate stabilizes fragile measuring grids.
